RUBYFRUIT'S HERSTORY
tabb In December, 1992, Kate Randall approached Linda Brawner about "taking over" the community's lesbian newsletter LunaSea.
tabb Excited about the prospect of helping women make connections and share information, Linda recruited Karen Morrison to assist with the writing aspects and then agreed. The name was changed to Rubyfruit Journal (a play on the classic Rita Mae Brown novel Rubyfruit Jungle) and the first issue was published in January, 1993.
tabb Linda, Karen, and a few friends stayed up all night - cutting, pasting, stamping, writing, and figuring out how to use a new computer (Linda had never used one) - all to produce the first 50ยข, ten-page issue. Five months later Norma Galindo joined the Rubyfruit team as the third volunteer editorial staff member. Bringing her creative talent and graphic arts expertise, Norma transformed the Journal into a much more professional and aesthetically pleasing work.
tabb In the years since the Journal began, the number of subscribers has grown from 175 to 380. The all volunteer staff has grown a great deal as well and currently consists of eight regular writers and a bindery staff of about 20. And the Journal, which has grown to an average of 24 pages per issue, now costs $1.50. The number of advertisers has also increased dramatically.
tabb Continuing to work out of our individual homes, we strive to improve the Journal while remaining true to our original mission.
